The Republic of Moldova has reaffirmed its strong commitment to actively contribute to the consolidation of democracy, rule of law, and European unity, in the context where it will take over the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in November. This message was conveyed by President Maia Sandu during her meeting in Strasbourg with the Secretary General of the organization, Alain Berset, reports IPN.

The discussions of the two officials also aimed at strengthening cooperation through the Action Plan of the Republic of Moldova – Council of Europe and the adoption of new measures for the defense of democracy and increasing resilience against external interference.

The head of state highlighted the contribution of the Council of Europe, including the Parliamentary Assembly, the Venice Commission, and the European Court of Human Rights, to the democratic development of Moldova and the strengthening of the rule of law. At the same time, Maia Sandu reaffirmed the commitment to continue reforms, especially in justice, in accordance with the expectations of citizens and the requirements for accession to the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova will hold the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, during the period of November 2025 – May 2026.

During the official visit to Strasbourg, President Maia Sandu had a series of meetings with high-ranking officials of the European Union. The head of state delivered a speech to the plenary of the European Parliament and met with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and security policy, Kaja Kallas, as well as the leaders of the main European political groups.

The most active volunteers of the second edition of the national campaign “Mathematics, from equal to equal” were awarded on Tuesday, at the closing event of the project. According to the organizers, over 300 high school students provided more than 3 thousand hours of free tutoring to ninth grade students, helping them prepare for the national mathematics exam, reports IPN.

The campaign took place between March and June and was organized by the Ministry of Education and Research, in partnership with the National Curriculum and Assessment Agency, UNICEF and UNDP Moldova.

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Research, Galina Rusu, thanked the high school students for their involvement and stated that they have demonstrated that peer support can make a difference in the learning process. “If you have managed to instill in them the confidence that they can understand mathematics and can put in effort, then you have achieved your goal”, said the ministry’s representative.

In turn, Galina Bulat, an education specialist at UNICEF Moldova, emphasized that the program has had benefits for both the students who received support and the mentors. According to her, explaining the lessons helps young people to consolidate their knowledge and develop skills such as communication, patience and empathy.

At the same time, Ana Moraru, representative of UNDP Moldova, noted that investing in education and developing skills in areas such as science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics is essential for shaping a modern society.

The campaign “Mathematics from equal to equal” is an educational volunteer initiative that aims to help middle school students prepare for exams and, at the same time, to develop civic spirit and mentoring skills among high school students.

The conduct of elections for the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia based on the proportional electoral system was discussed by President Maia Sandu with deputies from Comrat. The discussions focused on the application of a uniform electoral system throughout the country, in accordance with the recent decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the competencies of the UTA Gagauzia, reports IPN.

According to the Presidency, some members of the People’s Assembly present at the meeting supported the proposal for the regional vote to be organized according to the proportional model applied at the national level.

The President of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, Valentin Gaidarji, stated after the meeting that the representatives of the region will discuss with the entire body of deputies from Comrat the issues addressed at the meeting with the head of state. He pointed out that the dialogue between Chisinau and Comrat continues and that there is a common understanding on some topics, without providing details.

According to the Presidency, the Constitutional Court’s decision establishes that the electoral system must be uniform throughout the territory of the Republic of Moldova and approved by organic law by Parliament, in accordance with the country’s status as a unitary state.

The institution specifies that the Court’s decision is final and binding for all authorities. The Parliament is set to urgently review a project to amend the Electoral Code, so that the elections for the Gagauz People’s Assembly can be organized this autumn based on the new provisions.

The consultations between the central authorities and the representatives of Gagauzia will continue on Tuesday, with the participation of the mayors from the region.
