20% VAT for online orders from abroad, starting November 1. The tax will not be refunded in case of return

Online orders from foreign merchants, with a value of up to 150 euros, will be subject to a 20% VAT in the Republic of Moldova, starting November 1st. Posta Moldovei specifies that the tax will be applied to purchased goods, and in case of returning the package, the paid VAT will not be refunded, reports IPN.

According to the institution, the VAT can be paid at the time of placing the order, through the platform or the merchant, if this option is available, or upon collection of the parcel from Moldova Post, if the tax has not been paid in advance. For parcels with goods valued over 150 euros, the provisions of the current customs and tax legislation will continue to apply.

Shipments sent between individuals, without the involvement of a commercial entity, including gifts up to a value of 150 euros, will be exempt from VAT, under the conditions provided by law. Moldova Post recommends senders to correctly declare the content and nature of the shipments.

From January 1, 2027, a handling fee of 12 lei will be introduced for each targeted parcel. This will be charged separately from VAT and any potential customs duties or other applicable payments.

Moldova Post recommends customers to check, at the moment of placing the order, whether the VAT has been paid through the platform or the merchant, or if it will need to be paid upon collection of the parcel.

Over two thousand students are learning in the eight schools that teach in Romanian in the Transnistrian region, and their number is increasing. According to a report from the Promo-LEX Association regarding the human rights situation in the region, students, parents, and teachers of these institutions continue to be the target of intimidation and hostile messages from the structures in Tiraspol, reports IPN.

According to Promo-LEX, in the last five years, the number of students in institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Research has increased, including that of allophone children. This trend continues despite the demographic decline in the region, where the number of children under 18 has decreased by approximately 33% in the last decade. However, the demand for enrollment in schools teaching in Romanian exceeds the capacity of some institutions, which are faced with a lack of space and conditions insufficiently adapted to the educational process.

The report also signals pressures on families who choose education in Romanian, especially on parents employed in the subordinate structures of the so-called administration from Tiraspol. At the same time, representatives of the de facto structures in the region launch accusations against these schools, presenting them as politically engaged institutions or accusing them of distorting history and glorifying fascism and Nazism.

In August, Alexandr Stetiuc, the deputy of the so-called foreign minister from Tiraspol, labeled schools as “politically engaged” institutions. Subsequently, the alleged deputy Vadim Cravciuc accused them of distorting history and glorifying fascism and Nazism, while Andrei Safonov, a representative of the de facto structures in the region, described them as potential centers of subversion.

Promo-LEX draws attention to the fact that accusations of promoting Nazism and the rhetoric of “denazification” recall the justifications used by the Russian Federation to launch the large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Republic of Moldova needs an economic development model adapted to external shocks and current uncertainties. This should include stabilization mechanisms and guide investments towards research, development, and sectors with high added value. The recommendation was made during the launch of a new edition of the publication “Trends in the Moldovan Economy”, prepared by the National Institute of Economic Research of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, reports IPN.

“We can no longer have the same development model that we had or that we elaborated in normal situations and with which we move forward. We need to have a model, I would call it adaptive, which should have incorporated within it some stabilization levers”, declared the vice-rector of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, Victoria Cociug.

In turn, researcher Zinovia Toaca drew attention to the difficulty of predicting economic trends in the face of geopolitical uncertainties, high energy costs, low external demand and climate shocks.

“We are a small country, these impulses affect us greatly, whether they come from outside the Republic of Moldova, or they are related to decisions made at the local level, which, we must admit, affect us”, the researcher mentioned.

According to the study, the economy of the Republic of Moldova grew by 0.6% in the first half of 2026. For the entire year, INCE researchers estimate an economic growth of 1.8% and an average annual inflation of 7.3%. At the same time, a 7% increase in industrial production and investments is forecasted.
