As the Year of the White Tiger is approaching, the plush toys, souvenirs and other objects representing tigers are very popular with the visitors of the Christmas Fair held in central Chisinau.
The tigers are sold alongside baubles, amulets, souvenirs and other presents associated with the winter holidays. “We have tigers of different shapes and sizes – amulet tigers, tigers with magnet that can suit all the tastes,” said Zinaida Ivasishin, a seller of gifts.
The prices of the ‘tigers’ vary depending on the size and shape. The amulet tigers are the cheapest ones. They cost 10-20 lei. The plush tigers cost 30 lei and more, the tigers with magnet – from 15 lei to 25 lei, while the money box tigers – between 120 lei and 150 lei.
The seller said the range of presents is more varied this year.
“The prices of the New Year gifts have not increased much this year, except the lights. Last year, the lights were sold for 20 lei, while this year for 35 lei. The lights placed outside rose in price from 60 lei to 85 lei,” Zinaida Ivasishin said.
Anastasia, a buyer, said the prices are reasonable. “I now purchase decorations for the Christmas Tree. Later, I will buy presents, which are not very expensive. The prices of tigers are the same as of the bulls sold in 2009”.
The people prefer to purchase such presents as Santa Clauses, masks, picture frames, bells, planes and dishes with Christmas elements. The ceramics brought from Germany are more expensive, but they are of a higher quality, said Andrei Cazacu, a seller.
The sellers say they are satisfied with the sales, but hope the number of buyers will increase before the winter holidays.
The Year of the White Tiger starts on February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011. It is said that the most boldest dreams can be fulfilled this year.
