The former mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, has been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for insulting and intimidating a prosecutor, according to the court ruling, cited by Agence France-Presse.

Imamoglu appeared before a court in Silivri prison, where he has been held since March 25.

The party he leads has nominated him as its candidate for the next presidential elections in 2028.

In January, Imamoglu publicly questioned the probity of Istanbul’s prosecutor general, IPN reports.

Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested on March 19, along with more than a hundred close associates and associates, and charged with corruption, which he denies. His arrest triggered a wave of protests unprecedented in recent years in Turkey.

The National Agency for Energy Regulation will examine on Friday the request from Energocom regarding the increase in natural gas prices. The subject was included on the agenda of the ANRE meeting on July 24, reports IPN.

Energocom has requested an increase in the regulated price for consumers connected to low-pressure distribution networks from 13.35 lei to 19.37 lei per cubic meter, excluding VAT.

The request is motivated by the increase in natural gas procurement costs, against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the volatility of international markets. According to Energocom, these have generated an estimated tariff deficit of around 106 million lei.
