Special agency should deal with grand corruption, legal expert

Grand corruption should be fought by a special agency that is independent from the Parliament or Government, thinks the legal expert Veaceslav Gribincea.

In an interview with RFE/RL Moldova, the director of the Legal Resource Center said the pragmatical approach of those who fight corruption today following the principle “let’s investigate petty cases to get a bigger number, as this will look good on paper statistically speaking ” essentially doesn’t solve the problem. “So, while knowing that a fish rots from the head, they still start from the tail. In my opinion, a clear distinction should be made between grand corruption and petty corruption”, said the Veaceslav Gribincea.

The expert argued that in the region where Moldova is located, economic growth and subsequently higher budget income and prosperity for the citizens is possible only through foreign investment. The country can attract foreign investment only if there are adequate legal guarantees and a low level of corruption. Therefore, says Vladislav Gribincea, the fight against corruption and a deep judicial reform should be the next government’s top priority.

Tatiana Nistorica has been released from her position as Secretary of State for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. A decision in this regard was approved on Wednesday by the Government, at the proposal of Minister Radu Musteata, reports IPN.

At the presentation of the proposal for dismissal, the new Minister of Agriculture did not provide details regarding the reasons for the decision. The procedure had been initiated earlier by the former minister Ludmila Catlabuga, following the arrest of the Secretary of State in a corruption case.

Tatiana Nistorică was detained and placed under arrest in a corruption case, in which a representative of a business entity is also being investigated. According to law enforcement, the entrepreneur allegedly offered money to influence the decisions of the National Agency for Food Safety regarding the resumption of fodder imports from Ukraine, which had previously been suspended due to the detection of irregularities.
