27 individuals, including five children, have lost their lives to drowning in the first six months of the current year, according to data from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. In the context of World Drowning Prevention Day, marked annually on July 25, the National Agency for Public Health warns that these tragedies can be prevented by adhering to safety rules, reports IPN.

According to ANSP, drowning remains a significant public health issue in the Republic of Moldova, especially during the summer season, when the number of activities carried out near rivers, lakes, and aquatic basins increases.

Statistical data shows that in 2025, the mortality rate due to accidental drowning was 2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 2.8 cases in the previous year. Among children up to 17 years old, the rate remained at 0.1 cases per 10,000 children in both 2024 and 2025.

Specialists warn that the risk is higher for small children, people who are not familiar with water safety rules, those who consume alcohol before aquatic activities, fishermen, and people who use boats without protective equipment.

ANSP recommends constant supervision of children near water, swimming only in authorized places, using life jackets during boat travel, and avoiding alcohol consumption before or during water activities.

Globally, according to the World Health Organization, over 300 thousand people die annually from drowning.
