An increasing number of Moldovans support Moldova’s accession to the European Union, while fewer and fewer see a future in the Commonwealth of Independent States, according to the April iData survey presented at a news conference hosted by IPN.
According to the research conducted by the company “Data Inteligente” on a sample of 1,027 people, about 58% of the respondents would vote for Moldova’s accession to the European Union, while about 27% would oppose it. For the first time, a relative majority – 42% – would agree with Moldova’s exit from the CIS, while 32% would be against.
As for the regional profile, most supporters of European integration are located in the center of the country, in the districts of Orhei, Straseni, Hancesti, as well as in Chisinau. On the other hand, the inhabitants of the north-western and southern districts are, in general, not in favor of leaving the CIS.
The survey also analyzed the public perception of politicians’ activity. In the last month, Maia Sandu was named the most active politician by 16.5% of those surveyed. The head of state is followed by Chisinau mayor Ion Ceban with 5.6% and PSRM leader, former head of state Igor Dodon with 4.8%.
iData director general Mihai Bologan said that half of the respondents did not name any politician they consider the most active, invoking either the lack of interest in the latest events or the uncertainty regarding the activity of politicians. At the same time, the rankings regarding trust in Moldovan politicians showed significant differences.
In terms of trust, Maia Sandu is again in first place, with 25.35, followed by Ilan Shor and Igor Dodon, both with scores of about 9%.
The survey also included a question on the presidential election in Romania, in which almost 500,000 Moldovans with Romanian citizenship can vote. However, the director of iData stressed that, out of the total number of Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, only about 10% would go out to vote. Therefore, an objective result would be difficult to predict. Among the respondents with dual citizenship, most said they would vote for Nicusor Dan, followed by Elena Lasconi and Crin Antonescu.
The data were collected between April 16 and 28 by several methods, mainly CATI – by telephone. The poll has a margin of sampling error of ±3.35%.
