Last year, in the Republic of Moldova, 22,100 children were born, 6.6% fewer than in 2024 and almost 43% fewer compared to ten years ago. Of the total number, more than half of the newborns were male, with a ratio of 105 boys to 100 girls, reports IPN.

The National Bureau of Statistics data shows that in 2025 approximately 1,500 fewer children were born than in the previous year. The statistics also show that every third child was born out of wedlock. More than half of the births were in rural areas, where 11,300 children were born. Also, the statistical data indicates that families with four or more children are more numerous in rural areas: of the 2,700 children born last year in such families, over 73% are from villages.

The highest number of births were recorded among women aged between 25 and 34 years, and in rural areas, women have their first child earlier than in urban ones. The average age at first birth was almost 24 and a half years in rural areas and 28 and a half years in urban areas. In the city of Chișinău, women became mothers for the first time, on average, at 29 and a half years. At the same time, the proportion of mothers under the age of 20 slightly decreased and reached 5.1% of the total births recorded last year.
