In recent years, the Republic of Moldova has managed, through the collective effort of authorities and civil society, to strengthen the legislative framework for the protection of victims based on gender criteria. The message was conveyed during the fourth meeting of the Eastern Partnership Working Group for gender equality, an event hosted for the first time in Chisinau, reports IPN.

“I am pleased that, together with my colleagues from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Moldova and with the support of our partners within the European Commission, we have managed to organize this important dialogue platform in Chisinau. The discussions focused on women’s access to justice, with a special emphasis on combating gender-based violence,” specified the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

The authorities have particularly highlighted the legislative changes promoted to ensure access to legal counseling and case file materials at any stage of the process, as well as facilitating access to medical services, including psychological assistance.

The possibility of removing criminal liability through reconciliation with the aggressor has been excluded and the contraventional liability for harassment and victimization has been provided for.

Additionally, victims of domestic violence have been exempted from paying state and stamp fees in cases of property division or other property disputes.

“Recently, digital violence has been recognized as a distinct form of abuse, we have extended the applicability of protection measures and prolonged the duration of restraining orders,” emphasized the Minister of Justice.

Veronica Mihailov-Moraru added that one of the current priorities is adjusting the Law on the Rehabilitation of Crime Victims, to facilitate access to rehabilitation services and financial compensation.

“All these changes demonstrate the commitment of the Republic of Moldova to build a society where every individual is protected and respected,” concluded the minister.
