Moldova is advancing on the path of transformation into a stronger, more resilient and firmly anchored state within the European Union, interior minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin told a conference with the participation of European Commissioner for enlargement Marta Kos on Thursday. On this occasion, the institution’s strategic priorities for the period 2026-2030 were presented, IPN reports.

During the event, the seven sectoral programs aimed at public order and security, prevention and fight against crime, control of small arms and light weapons, civil protection and Emergency Management, border management, migration and asylum, as well as phased integration of foreigners were presented.

In the field of Public Order and security, national authorities focus on police services that respect human rights. The number of patrol teams will increase and the average response time will decrease.

In terms of combating crime, an online platform for reporting crimes is established and a national cyber incident alert and response system is implemented. In the area of migration and asylum, a balance between public security and the protection of human rights will be chosen. The programme of phased integration of foreigners and displaced persons aims to facilitate their access to education, health, work, housing and social services.

The program dedicated to the control of small arms and light weapons will involve stricter monitoring of ammunition, and the program for civil protection and Emergency Management will help to increase the capacity to respond to disasters through training and equipping the responsible units with appropriate equipment.

Commissioner Marta Kos appreciated the resilience of Moldovan institutions and stressed that this effort does not go unnoticed in Europe. “I hope that you will continue to build a safe and secure Moldova, because this is important for both Moldova and Europe, and we will ensure that we do the same in the future,” the European official said in her speech.

The commissioner noted that in a few weeks, Moldova will conclude negotiations for the screening of all chapters. This means that European and Moldovan officials will analyze Moldovan policies and legislation, which implies a review of more than 100 thousand pages of Moldovan legislation. “The quality and celerity of your work were exemplary and I want to congratulate you on this occasion. Based on these advances, we will be able to accelerate accession negotiations,” said Marta Kos.

The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, has announced that he will request the direct involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the issue of water supply to the Republic of Moldova. The mayor stated that he will send a letter to the presidential administration in Kyiv, given the risks that a potential water crisis could pose to the population and institutions in the capital, according to IPN.

Ion Ceban noted that Chisinau is home to social, medical, and strategic institutions, and that an interruption in the water supply could have major consequences. The mayor expressed his hope that the Ukrainian authorities will find solutions to prevent a crisis.

The statements were made on Wednesday following a meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Commission for Exceptional Situations, which was convened to assess the measures needed in light of a potential water supply crisis. During the meeting, a set of actions was approved to prevent risks arising from the decrease in the flow of the Dniester River.

Apa-Canal Chisinau has been tasked with continuously monitoring the water flow at the intake source, as well as the operation of the intake, pumping, transmission, and treatment facilities, in order to prevent any disruptions to the water supply. The Chisinau City Hall and the operator will request official information from central public authorities regarding the hydrological regime of the Dniester River, including data on water discharge volumes, any changes to the discharge regime, and forecasts for the coming period.

According to Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder, the Ukrainian side has reported a decrease in the water volume in the Novodnestrovsk reservoir, which regulates the flow of the Dniester River. The minister maintains that the water will not disappear, but that drawing it may become more difficult due to the river’s low water level. Gheorghe Hajder states that, according to information provided by Apa-Canal Chisinau, the company does not have sufficient reliable alternative sources to ensure the capital’s water supply in the event of a prolonged interruption in water intake from the Dniester or severe pollution.
