Briefness first and foremost – September 13, 2018 IPN digest

As all the people of good faith, the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova believes the European development course is the only one that can be embraced by the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, James Pettit said the European integration process undertaken by the Republic of Moldova in the recent period slowed down compared with 2016, when progress was witnessed in this regard. According to him, it is important that the authorities do not take a break and realize that constant work is needed in this area.

The ambassador considers corruption that exists in all the areas is the biggest challenge faced by the Republic of Moldova in the European integration process. When the economy grows, many problems will disappear. But a judicial system that works normally, in accordance with the EU and international standards, is needed to attract foreign investors.

The diplomat called the migration of Moldova’s population is a national tragedy.

Following the electoral failure in Chișinău, the Parliament’s commission for appointments and immunities examined the impact of the social media on the elections. The MPs ascertained that clear regulations that would ensure the integrity of the electoral process and the respect for the electoral rights of the citizens are needed. In particular, it was suggested creating a parliamentary sub-commission that after each election, in concert with the electoral authority, would examine the experience, irregularities and difficulties witnessed during voting so as to later suggest amendments to the electoral legislation.

On September 14, Parliament stages the Open Doors Day to celebrate the International Day of Democracy that is marked by all democracies on September 15.

Unlike the MPs’ preoccupation with their image, in a news conference at IPN, Fiodor Ghelici, the chairman of the Public Association “Moldova mea”, said that among the versions spread by the Socialists in some of the country’s districts is the fact that the accident was an attempt on the President planned by the oligarchs led by Vlad Plahotniuc or that it was an attempt orchestrated by the Americans, Europeans or Romanians because Igor Dodon has friendship relations with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Another disseminated hypothesis is that Islamist bandits took revenge after the Turkish citizens were expelled from Moldova. According to the activist, all these versions are false and manipulative.

On the other hand, Socialist MP Vlad Batrîncea, who launched the attempt version, said they want a broad investigation with international expertise into the road accident that involved President Igor Dodon and a part of his family. The MP expressed his indignation at the fact that the head of the State Guard and Protection Service two days after the accident announced that an attempt on the President was excluded.

Over 6,000 persons who signed a petition of ACUM, addressed to the European institutions, have yet another reason for concern. They ask to investigate and prosecute the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who were involved in money laundering and the theft of the US$1 billion. Another 44,000 signatures are yet to be collected.

According to ACUM, the decision to submit the petition was taken because since the stealing of US$1 billion (12% of the GDP) from the banking system was discovered, the Moldovan authorities, together with the law enforcement agencies of the country, have recovered no leu. On the contrary, they protect the persons involved in this theft.

Even if Moldova is known as the country where a US$ 1 billion was stolen (or probably it is known because of this?!), the number of applicants for Moldovan nationally increases. As many as 2,307 applications to obtain Moldovan nationality by recognition according to the simplified procedure were submitted between April 19 and August 31.

Under the simplified procedure, the persons older than 18 who were born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, no matter whether they have or not the nationality of another state and live in the country or abroad, can be recognized as Moldovan citizens when they submit an application to this effect.
