Antigovernment protests were staged in Moldova last weekend again. On Saturday, sympathizers of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) protested in Soroca town “against the abuses and antisocial policies of the government, of Maia Sandu”. On Sunday, the Shor Parry mounted an antigovernment protest in Chisinau. As in the previous protests, the police dealt with provocations against police officers and destabilization actions. Also, a car with 49 passengers aboard, which was heading for the protest venue, caught fire near Strășeni, IPN reports.
The PSRM said the protest in Soroca involved about 1,500 people who came to express their dissatisfaction with the “good times” that came in Moldova and with the deplorable situation in the country, including the high food and utility prices. “The people don’t have money to heat their homes, to buy food products and medicines. They don’t know how to survive,” stated the Socialists.
By tradition, the Shor Party mobilized its members and supporters to a new protest in central Chisinau. Traffic jams appeared on the streets of the capital city due to the demonstration. A bus transporting about 30 persons to the protest hit a parked vehicle. Another bus with 50 people aboard, which was going to the protest, started to burn on the Chisinau-Balti road, not far from Strășeni town. No one was hurt.
The party noted that about 60,000 people from all over Moldova took part in the protest. Also, almost 30,000 people could not get to the protest venue due to the impediments placed by the police as the buses and minibuses were banned from traveling through Chisinau.
The General Police Inspectorate said the protest on Sunday was staged in the form of a march and a number of arteries downtown were blocked. The protest involved about 3,600 persons. The demonstration cannot be described as peaceful because protesters staged provocations against the police and citizens and violated the legislation on public assembly.
