Romanian meteorologists warn that the weather will remain exceptionally cold in the coming days. For the period of May 1-2, mixed precipitation is forecasted, in the form of sleet and snow, at altitudes over 1,500 meters in the Eastern and Southern Carpathians. In the rest of the country, the maximum temperatures will range between 7 and 16 degrees, and rain will be locally present in the south and east.

The airport administration in the Austrian capital has announced that air traffic to and from Vienna is affected. Over 230 flights scheduled for landing have been diverted, cancelled or delayed. Departure flights are facing the same issues.

The Vienna ring road was temporarily closed, and other sections of the highway were blocked due to traffic jams, immobilized trucks, and reduced visibility, reported the Austrian Automobile Association.

According to the Prime Minister’s decision, all public institutions will start their schedule at 09:00 AM, to avoid congestion. Their leaders can decide to end the activity earlier or implement remote work, where possible.

The Ministry of Education and Research recommends that decisions be made based on the distance traveled by students, the condition of the roads, snow removal capacity, and the situation of transported children, especially in villages.

To manage the situation, the national crisis cell has been activated. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and the National Army will intervene, if necessary, on the affected segments. The Ministry of Infrastructure will ensure the snow removal and the combat of ice, while the Ministry of Internal Affairs will monitor traffic and intervene in case of blockages or accidents.

The authorities recommend citizens to avoid non-essential travel, to get informed from official sources and to abide by safety rules. Drivers are urged to drive carefully, and institutions and businesses are encouraged to implement remote work as much as possible.

Contacted by IPN, the head of the weather forecast department of the State Hydrometeorological Service, Nadejda Stolear, announced that on Wednesday night to Thursday temperatures will range between -10 and -5 degrees, and on Thursday during the day – between -7 and -2 degrees Celsius.

From Friday, the frost will be much harsher. Nighttime temperatures will drop from -16..-11 to -18..-15 degrees. It will also be colder during the day. The mercury in the thermometers will fall from -7..-2 to -10..-5 degrees Celsius.

The General Inspectorate of Police reports that traffic is difficult on route R-7, in the Rascani district, Parjota village, as well as in the south of the country. On route M-3, Cahul district, Slobozia Mare locality, due to the ice formed on the roadway, six large tonnage vehicles cannot continue their journey.

At the same time, the City Hall of Chisinau warns that, due to unfavorable conditions, as well as sleet, there is a risk of ice forming on roads and sidewalks. Business entities and property managers are called upon to intervene in combating the ice on the territories they administer.

The authorities assure that the municipal services, along with the prices, continuously monitor and intervene on the ground, so that the situation is under control.
