Gagauzia could become an advantage for the entire Republic of Moldova, and the relations between Comrat and Chisinau must be built on respect, law, and dialogue. The statement belongs to the former deputy, Fiodor Gagauz, who urged the central authorities to stop treating the region as a problem.

In a press conference at IPN, the politician, who announced that he will run for the position of governor, stated that the future of Gagauzia cannot be built on confrontation and lack of trust. According to him, the relations between Comrat and Chisinau must be based on the respect of the region’s rights and on cooperation.

Addressing the central authorities, the politician stated that the inhabitants of Gagauzia should not be viewed as adversaries. “Stop viewing Gagauzia as a problem. Stop making the Gagauz people enemies. The Gagauz have always been and remain patriots of this state. We have no other homeland. The Republic of Moldova is our common home. Just like all citizens, we want a strong, independent and prosperous Moldova,” declared Fiodor Gagauz.

According to him, respecting the rights of the region does not weaken the state, but contributes to its strengthening. “I am convinced that Gagauz autonomy can become an advantage for the entire country. The time has come to capitalize on this potential together,” said the politician.

Fiodor Gagauz stated once more that adherence to the law and dialogue between Comrat and Chisinau should not be viewed as concessions, but necessary elements for the stability, unity, and development of the Republic of Moldova.

“I believe in the Gagauz people. I believe in Gagauzia. I believe in Moldova. We cannot change everything that has happened in recent years, but we can decide together what Gagauzia will be like tomorrow,” the politician affirmed.

Former deputy Fiodor Gagauz announces that he will run for the position of Governor of Gagauzia. He says he made this decision after consulting with the residents of the region and declares himself ready to assume the responsibility of the role.

In a press conference at IPN, Fiodor Gagauz mentioned that the upcoming elections for the position of governor and for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will play an important role in defining the future of the region and should represent a moment of renewal and responsible choice.

“Today is not the time to stand aside. I am convinced that every capable person who can benefit their people must take responsibility. That is why, after serious reflections and consultations with the residents of the region, I decided to run for the position of Governor of Gagauzia,” the politician declared.

According to Fiodor Gagauz, the region needs people who not only talk about problems, but are capable of proposing solutions, defending the interests of autonomy, ensuring the respect of its competencies, and building constructive relationships with central authorities.

“It is a conscious decision and a great responsibility that I am ready to take on. I do it not for the sake of political struggle, but because I am convinced that today Gagauzia needs peace, unity and development more than ever”, said Fiodor Gagauz.

In his opinion, in recent years Gagauzia has been marked by political confrontations between the central authorities and the region’s leadership, which would have led to the limitation of the region’s competencies and its political isolation. He believes that a new stage in the development of Gagauzia is necessary.

The former president of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, stated that the changes regarding the competences of the Gagauz autonomy in organizing elections do not represent an infringement on its status. “Gagauzia does not have enemies in Moldova,” Tănase declared in the show “Teritoria Svobodi” with Lilia Burakovski, reports IPN.

Alexandru Tanase also stated that Comrat is being “brazenly manipulated”. “I am very sorry that, after 30 years, other political parties are not normally represented there, and pro-Moscow oriented politicians control the situation in the autonomy”, clarified the former president of the Constitutional Court.

In his opinion, this is a backlog of Chisinau, for which the country will pay a high price due to the ignorance of the situation in the region.

He mentioned that, most likely, legislative changes will be made, according to which Chisinau will designate the electoral bodies itself that will organize the elections in Gagauzia – on the date set by the Popular Assembly.

“Gagauzia has no enemy in the Republic of Moldova. There is no politician – not even the most marginal – who would say that autonomy should be abolished or that certain competencies should be reduced,” concluded the former president of the Constitutional Court.

Although the law on voluntary amalgamation applies nationwide, in the Gagauz Autonomous Region there are, for now, no initiatives by local authorities to initiate this process. The statement belongs to Diana Chiriac, head of the LPA Directorate within the State Chancellery, and was made at the public debate “Public administration reform in Gagauz Autonomous Region”, organized by the IPN Press Agency. According to Diana Chiriac, no decision to initiate voluntary amalgamation has been adopted in the region, even though the central authorities have presented the procedures and advantages of the reform to the mayors.

Diana Chiriac mentioned that the special status of UTA Gagauzia is protected both by the Constitution and by the Law on the legal status of autonomy, and the legal framework for voluntary amalgamation was developed taking into account these peculiarities.

“UTA Gagauzia has a special status that is not only enshrined in the special law on the status of autonomy, but also in the Constitution. On the other hand, the law on voluntary amalgamation takes into account the specifics of autonomy. But one thing is clear, the reform has been initiated throughout the territory of the Republic of Moldova, it also reflects on UTA Gagauzia”, explained Diana Chiriac.

According to her, despite the discussions held with the mayors from the region, so far no official decision has been taken to initiate the process of voluntary amalgamation.

“In UTA Gagauzia we have no decision to initiate voluntary amalgamation. There were some intentions outlined between the mayor of Comrat and the Ferapontievca town hall. We had discussions with the mayors from the autonomy, we were there at their request, to explain to them what the amalgamation procedure is and what are the opportunities. There were good discussions, but at the moment we have no decision to initiate voluntary amalgamation”, said Diana Chiriac.

At the same time, the head of the APL Directorate within the State Chancellery pointed out that the situation at the national level is different, the process of voluntary amalgamation being in full swing. “At the country level, we have 1,150 initiation decisions. This is just about intention decisions. But we can already talk about clear decisions of voluntary amalgamation and this number is increasing every week. At present, we have 42 final decisions of voluntary amalgamation. But this number changes from day to day”, said Diana Chiriac.

The deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia have adopted a declaration condemning the decision of the Constitutional Court to annul some of the region’s competences in the electoral field and the appointment of the leadership of some territorial state institutions. The document was approved on Friday, during an extraordinary session, with the vote of 20 deputies, while two abstained, reports IPN.

In the statement, the deputies from Comrat assert that the decision affects the special status of the Gagauz Territorial Unit and affirm that they will defend the rights and competencies of the autonomy by all legal means.

The President of the People’s Assembly, Valentin Gaidarji, criticized the decision of the Constitutional Court and called for the resignation of the institution’s president, Domnica Manole. According to him, the decision could exacerbate relations between Comrat and Chisinau.

At the same time, the legislative body in Comrat has asked the central authorities to abandon the unilateral modification of the region’s legal status and to resume dialogue. The deputies argue that European integration should not lead to a reduction of Gagauzia’s responsibilities.

Following the complaint filed by the Ministry of Justice, the Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional the provisions that allowed the authorities from Comrat to participate in the appointment of the Gagauzia UTA Police leadership and in the establishment of regional electoral bodies. At the same time, the Parliament was asked to adjust the legislation in accordance with the Court’s decision.

The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia has set the election date for November 15th. The decision was approved by a majority of votes during an extraordinary meeting, held after the election of the new president of the legislative body in Comrat, Valentin Gaidarji. Before the vote, the deputies had closed-door discussions in the office of the new president, at his invitation. Even so, to date, no normative act regulating the organization of the vote has been adopted, reports the IPN correspondent from Gagauzia.

During the debates, Deputy Vladimir Kissa drew attention to the fact that, in the same session, the deputies removed from the agenda the subject concerning the legal regulation of the organization of elections. In this context, some of the elected officials questioned the appropriateness of setting the date of the vote before clarifying all legislative aspects.

The Vice President of the People’s Assembly, Gheorghi Leiciu, stated that, in the absence of eliminating legal and organizational obstacles, the set date could have a formal character.

In turn, Deputy Ivan Karadja, the one who proposed the election date, stated that the date of the vote must first be established, and then the necessary documents should be approved and the Central Electoral Commission of Gagauzia should be formed. He expressed his conviction that there is enough time until November 15 to complete all procedures.

Following the debates, the deputies approved by majority vote the organization of elections in the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia for the VIII legislature, on November 15.

The mandate of the Gagauzia People’s Assembly expired in November 2025, and the elections scheduled for March 22 and June 21 were cancelled by courts due to the use of the term “Electoral Commission” instead of “Electoral Council” in the APG decisions. Although the legislation provides for a four-year term, it ends with the validation of the new composition of the Assembly. Currently, the Comrat legislature no longer has the power to amend laws, but can only adopt decisions.

An anesthesiologist-resuscitator from the Comrat District Hospital has been sent to court, being accused of negligently violating the rules of providing medical assistance, an act which allegedly led to the death of a patient, IPN reports.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the case involves a 47-year-old man, brought to the Emergency Unit on January 19, 2025, following a road accident, with multiple severe injuries.

Law enforcement officials mention that the doctor would have underestimated the severity of the patient’s condition, partially attributing the symptoms to alcohol intoxication and without arranging for his admission to the intensive care unit. Also, continuous monitoring was not ensured and the necessary investigations and treatment were not initiated in time.

The prosecutors also maintain that the medical documentation would have been incompletely filled out, without fully reflecting the patient’s condition and the interventions performed.

According to forensic medical expertise, the patient required monitoring and intensive care, and the state of intoxication does not justify the reduction of medical attention. Specialists concluded that the death, which occurred the day after hospitalization, could have been avoided if the mandatory medical measures had been applied in time.

Two deans of the State University of Comrat have been detained in a corruption case, and the rector of the institution is being investigated while free.
According to the CNA, several episodes of corruption have been documented, including cases involving foreign citizens who allegedly benefited from undue advantages in the study process. Also, law enforcement is verifying information regarding the preparation and sale of thesis papers for a fee, the price of a paper being estimated at around 10 thousand lei.

CNA officers conducted searches at the State University of Comrat, in the cars and homes of the targeted individuals. As a result of the criminal investigations, the deans of the Law and Economics Faculties were detained for 72 hours.

The resignation of Nicolae Ormanji from the position of interim president of the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia remained unresolved, after the legislative session in Comrat lacked a quorum. After examining the subject, at the time of voting on the decision project, some deputies refused to vote, while others left the room, reports IPN.

According to the procedure presented during the meeting, after Nicolae Ormanji’s withdrawal, the duties of the interim president of the People’s Assembly are to be taken over by Vice President Gheorghe Leiciu until a new regional legislative leadership is designated. The People’s Assembly regulations also stipulate that the president’s duties can be temporarily exercised by one of the vice presidents during his absence.

During the debates, Leiciu stated that blocking the procedure risks creating difficulties in the legislative activity, as the institution must have a person responsible for signing official documents and exercising administrative duties.

Nicolae Ormanji submitted his resignation on June 2, following a failed APG meeting due to lack of quorum. The deputies from Comrat were then supposed to adopt the regulation regarding the organization of elections for the new composition of the Popular Assembly.
