After the National Political Council of the Party “Action and Solidarity” decided to support a Socialist candidate for Parliament Speaker, the party’s president Maia Sandu said this decision adopted by the majority was to take this risk, being aware of implications. At the same time, it seems that this is the only possibility of seeing if there are sufficient votes in Parliament for starting the process of freeing the state institutions, of de-oligarchizing the state and of building the rule of law.
The Dignity and Truth (DA) Party is ready to support the Socialists’ nominee for Parliament Speaker, but on certain conditions. Andrei Năstase told a press conference that “DA conditionally agrees to vote for a Speaker proposed by PSRM that is honest and uninvolved in corrupt schemes and immoral acts, and only after the above-mentioned conditions are fulfilled”.“Let it be known that our party can not vote for any candidate proposed by the Party of Socialists, especially a person with integrity issues, involved in corruption schemes and immoral acts”, underlined Năstase. Further conditions include that at the next Parliament sitting the Socialist group has to support a declaration that acknowledges the “captivity of state institutions” and to fix the date of local elections.
Joseph Daul, the president of the European People’s Party (EPP), has praised ACUM’s decision “to assume the responsibility of governing” in Moldova, describing it as “an act of patriotism and political maturity”. “I would like to highly commend today’s decision of ACUM bloc’s Maia Sandu (PAS) and Andrei Nastase (PPDA) to establish a governing arrangement with PSRM in order to liberate the Republic of Moldova from Plahotniuc and his oligarchic control. I am aware that it was one of the most difficult decisions of their political careers and in the history of their parties. The risks and political divergences between ACUM and PSRM are indeed enormous but the risks of allowing Plahotniuc to control and further destroy Moldova are even greater”, stated Joseph Daul in a press release published on EPP’s website.
The Party of Socialists convenes its National Council for final discussions and decisions concerning the political situation for June 7, 3pm. As a result of the held discussions it was agreed that the party will continue the dialogue and will assist on the positions stated in the April 12 decision of the National Council. These refer to the priority adoption of a package of laws, including social and economic laws and laws related to the interethnic relations and strengthening of the state institutions. The Socialists demand to restore the President’s powers that existed before October 1, 2016, to divide the responsibilities in governance and to vote in the leader of the PSRM Zinaida Grecheanyi as Parliament Speaker. They insists on managing such areas as foreign policy, public order and defense and the country’s reunification and controlling the relevant ministries.
A protest was mounted at the head office of the Party “Action and Solidarity” on June 6 after the party announced it is ready to support the Party of Socialists’ candidate for Parliament Speaker. “The alternative is for the PAS not to set up filters of a poor quality, but to mobilize the voters in an exemplary way and to win a majority of seats of MP if it cannot stage a revolution. It should win a majority of seats by democratic ways and should change the regime. We should go towards Europe, towards civilization. Where do we go back to? Towards Siberia?” asked Vasile Costiuc, the leader of the Party “Democracy at Home”. The protest involved several veterans of the Nistru war who were represented by Gennady Cosovan, president of the War Veterans Association “Faith to the Motherland”.
The Chisinau Court of Appeals today postponed a hearing to examine Vlad Filat’s request to review a district court ruling that denied the former prime minister’s recourse to the Constitutional Court. The reason cited for the postponement is Filat’s health situation. This is the second delay in Filat’s second case this week alone. The court sitting on Monday was postponed because apparently the administration of Prison no.13 for some reason had not received instructions to escort Filat to the Court.
The Department of Anatomic Pathology of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga” has received state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for cervical cancer screening and prevention. The equipment was bought by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Rita Columbia, UNFPA Representative in Moldova, noted that each day one woman in our country is diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 1,500 women died in the last five years because of the disease. “We need to inform women that the Papanicolaou test is available and that they should have one once every three years. Moldova is in a good situation, too, as the test is free”, said Rita Columbia, adding that for UNFPA it is important that women’s rights are respected.
