In race for Orhei Mayoralty, 8 candidates remain. Who else has been excluded from competition?

The candidate for the position of mayor of Orhei municipality, Dumitru Melnic, from the Communist Party, has been excluded from the electoral race. The decision was made by the Electoral Council of the Orhei municipal electoral district following an approach by the party, which argued that his appointment did not respect the position of the central bodies of the PCRM, reports IPN.

According to the decision of CECE Orhei, the party has decided not to provide political support to the candidate and specified that it does not assume political, financial or organizational responsibility for his actions and statements.

Under these circumstances, on April 17, the Orhei electoral council completely revoked the decision of April 9 regarding the registration of Dumitru Melnic as a candidate for the position of mayor of the municipality of Orhei.

Initially, 10 candidates were registered in the mayoral race for the municipality of Orhei. At the end of last week, Victor Pertu, the candidate of the “Democratia Acasa” Political Party, was also disqualified from the race. The decision was issued by the Central Election Commission, which found that he had been involved in the activities of the former Shor political party.

Thus, eight candidates remained in the race: Ramiz Ansarov, Vasile Adasan, Diana Memet, Sergiu Aga, Sergiu Stanciu, Stanislav Balan, Andrei Don and Sergiu Pislaru.

Individuals and companies that prepare, for a fee, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses will be penalized with fines, and online platforms promoting such services will be blocked. The proposals were made during a public debate organized by the Ministry of Education and Research and the Parliamentary Committee for Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sports, and Mass Media, reports IPN.

The MEC proposes to supplement the Code of Contraventions and the Penal Code with penalties for both individuals and companies that provide scientific paper editing services. The measures aim at large fines, blocking of websites, and banning sponsored advertising for such services.

According to MEC data, a survey involving over four thousand students shows that approximately 23% are aware of instances where classmates have presented at exams papers written by others. On the other hand, anti-plagiarism software used by universities cannot identify custom-made papers.

The Minister of Education, Dan Perciun, stated that academic fraud and lack of integrity directly affect the prestige of universities and devalue the diplomas issued. The chairwoman of the parliamentary committee on the matter, Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, emphasized the urgent need to amend the legislation and for a joint effort of institutions, in collaboration with law enforcement and university leaderships.

Representatives of the academic environment have supported the initiative and proposed additional measures, such as academic integrity hours and a national anti-plagiarism system based on artificial intelligence. The bill is set to be finalized and subjected to consultations in the upcoming period. The subject came under the authorities’ scrutiny following a journalistic investigation about networks and online platforms allegedly selling, for a fee, custom-made bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral works.

The social networking platform eYou was launched in Bucharest on Tuesday, designed as a European alternative to the social media networks of global tech giants. The founders of the project, among them a Frenchman settled in Romania, aim to provide a space based on European values and algorithmic transparency, reports IPN.

Entrepreneurs Grégoire Vigroux and Jasseem Allybokus promise a paradigm shift compared to other global platforms and propose a model focused on combating misinformation and reducing the information bubbles that dominate today’s networks, according to Economedia.

According to the founders, the fact-checking system integrated into each post uses four different models of artificial intelligence that are put in competition to generate the most objective response. The system explains whether information is true, partially true, or false, also having an educational role for users.

The user data of eYou is stored in Belgium and is protected by European GDPR legislation, which makes it inaccessible to American authorities. And while it does not aim to compete with American or Chinese giants in the social media field, the founders say there is enough room in the market for a European platform that promotes European values.
