Clocks to be set one hour forward

Moldova switches to summer time on the night of March 26. Clocks will be set one hour forward and 3:00am will become 4:00am, IPN reports.

The Daylight Saving Time practice is used in 110 countries. Moldova started to apply it in 1979 in order to use natural light in an optimal way and to reduce artificial lighting. Of the European states, Iceland is the only country that does not change the clock.

Russia gave up changing the clock in 2014. Thus, from March 26 Chisinau and Moscow will have the same time. The difference in time between Moldova and other states where Moldovan migrants are concentrated remains the same. Italy, Spain and France are one hour back. The difference with Portugal and the UK is of minus two hours. In Greece, the time is the same as in Moldova. Turkey is one hour forward, while Israel switched to summer time on March 24 and is now one hour ahead of Moldova.

The Daylight Saving Time was introduced at the suggestion of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. This practice was first applied by New Zealand in 1895.

On March 25, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, the Republic of Moldova will observe Earth Hour. Every year, hundreds of millions of people around the world switch off their lights for one designated hour to demonstrate a commitment to fighting climate change. At 7:00pm, Moldovan artists will give a performance at the Rascani university campus of the Technical University of Moldova to celebrate the event.
