Money transfers from abroad made in favor of individuals from the Republic of Moldova in the first quarter of 2019 came to US$276.81 million. According to the National Bank of Moldova, the transfers recalculated in U.S. dollars decreased by 7.0% compared with the first quarter of 2018. The fluctuations in the exchange rate of original currencies against the U.S. dollar contributed 4.7% to the decrease in the value of transfers in the first quarter of 2019. However, the effective decrease in transfers was of 2.3%. In terms of the geographical origin, money transfers from the EU represented 44.5% of the transfers, up 6.5% compared with the first quarter of 2018, those from the CIS region – 21.5%, down 7.7%, while those from other countries, except for the EU and CIS, - 34.0%, as opposed to 32.8% in the first quarter of 2018.
Over 100 films of different genres will be broadcast within this year’s edition of the International Festival of Theater and Film School “ClassFest” that is held during May 7-12. The festival will feature film schools from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Germany, Italy, Poland, Kazakhstan, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kirgizstan, and Moldova. There will be screened short and full-length fiction, documentary and animated feature films.
In the public debate “European Parliament elections, implications for Moldova”, which is the 110th installment of IPN’s Developing Political Culture Series, held in partnership with Radio Moldova, Igor Boțan, the Series’s standing expert, said “these elections are important not only because we share a border with the EU through Romania, but also because about a third of Moldovans have Romanian and, consequently, EU citizenship and have the right to vote in these elections. So, Moldovans can influence the representation of Romania in the European Parliament. We all know that Romania gets to delegate 32 MEPs. Twenty-three political parties and seven independent candidates are competing in Romania in these elections”. According to him, there is a vast political offer that Moldovans can pick from.
In a press briefing, MP Ilan Shor criticized PAS leader Maia Sandu, claiming that she “should not be allowed to be in government or in Parliament, because she was one of the key members of the team of (ex-prime minister Vlad Filat), who was convicted for this (bank fraud) crime”. Without naming anyone in particular, the Shor Party leader criticized during a press conference the behavior “of some lawmakers who follow orders from Brussels and Moscow”. “I get the impression that if the foreign masters were to call back the MPs they control, Parliament will be left almost empty. Our Parliament and our country doesn’t need masters from neither the East nor the West”.
Starting with June 1 this year, traders will be authorized to sell water, tea, coffee, juices and ice-cream at stalls in the parks of Chisinau, not yet on the streets of the city. The Buiucani district head’s office suggested 39 places, the Centru district head’s office – 32, while the Botanica district head’s office – 71. An order will be made by May 15 and this will specify the exact location and the number of authorized stalls.
