Weather forecasters issued a warning about falling icicles. The head of the State Hydrometeorology Service Ilie Boian has told Info-Prim Neo that the length of icicles in parts may reach two meters.

Ilie Boian said in Chisinau there are many old buildings that do not have a system for draining the melting snow, but the layer of snow on the roofs is rather great. “This layer is not cleaned and it can melt during three weeks. The temperatures are now below zero, but it will grow warmer next week and the danger posed by falling icicles will increase,” he stated.

According to the Service’s head, in the large towns the buildings where icicles are formed are fenced and there are placed warning signs for the people to avoid those places.

Ilie Boian informed that the weather will grow gradually warmer the next days and there will be snow. Severe frost is not forecast. Thermometers will show zero degrees Celsius during the day and down to minus 15 degrees Celsius at night, mainly in northern Moldova.

The fire that broke out Thursday morning at a warehouse on Uzinelor Street in the capital was completely extinguished after more than 24 hours of intervention. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the fire affected an area of approximately 2,750 square meters, reports IPN.

In the areas affected by the fire, there were construction materials, equipment, production machinery and other goods. The rescuers specify that three rooms were affected, and throughout the night, a fire brigade remained on the scene to monitor the situation, remove the affected elements and intervene on small outbreaks.

The fire broke out on Thursday, around 06:30 AM, and spread rapidly, with an increased level of intervention being established. To prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings, firefighters organized five intervention sectors. 82 IGSU employees participated in extinguishing the fire, with 13 special vehicles and eight auxiliary vehicles.

The specialists of the Experimental Firefighting Laboratory continue their research to establish the circumstances and cause of the fire outbreak.

The Parliament approved in the first reading, with the majority vote of the PAS deputies, the amendments to the Electoral Code that establish new rules for the organization of the elections of the governor and the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia. The project sparked debates in the plenary, the opposition accusing that the initiative restricts the competences of the autonomous region and is promoted hastily, while the authors argue that the changes are necessary to align the legislation with the decisions of the Constitutional Court and to ensure a constitutional electoral framework, reports IPN.

The deputy of the Alternativa faction, Alexandr Stoianoglo, stated that the project exceeds the limits set by the decisions of the Constitutional Court and affects the balance between the central authorities and the ATU Gagauzia. According to him, the changes would deprive Gagauzia of the right to independently organize regional elections and would introduce new requirements for candidates for the position of governor, which are not provided for in the Law on the special legal status of Gagauzia.

Criticism was also formulated by the Vice President of Parliament, the deputy of the Socialist Party Vlad Batrincea. “We are not talking only about Gagauzia today. This is the 13th project in the last three years to amend the Electoral Code. We cannot talk about respect for the law when laws change according to political interest,” declared Vlad Batrincea.

In response, the vice-president of the Parliamentary Commission for Public Administration and Regional Development, PAS deputy Larisa Voloh, rejected the accusations and stated that the status of the region is not affected. “No one is taking Gagauz autonomy, no one is limiting people’s right to choose their representatives, no one is changing the identity or special status of the region. We are doing what is natural for a rule of law state. We are building a clear, coherent and constitutional electoral framework,” Larisa Voloh declared.

The project was approved in the first reading with 52 votes from the deputies of the Action and Solidarity Party.

The amendments provide for the establishment of the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia, which will function as a permanent electoral authority and will organize regional elections. At the same time, the Electoral Code stipulates the concept of “regional elections”, which includes the election of the governor, the deputies in the Popular Assembly, and the referendums held in the region.
