The government proposes for the Constitutional Court the current president of the Court, Domnica Manole, and the former Minister of Justice, Sergiu Litvinenco. The announcement was made on Thursday evening by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who specified that the government will approve the appointment at the next meeting, reports IPN.
“Both candidates have the professional skills and legal training necessary to ensure the respect of the Constitution and impartially fulfill their duties during their mandate,” asserts the head of the executive.
According to him, as a judge of the Constitutional Court, Domnica Manole consistently worked to ensure constitutional control and guarantee the supremacy of the Constitution. At the same time, as the president of the parliamentary legal committee, appointments and immunities, and the Minister of Justice, Sergiu Litvinenco began reforming the system to create an independent judiciary, which would regain its good name and the trust of the citizens, says Dorin Recean.
The Constitutional Court consists of six judges, appointed for a term of six years. Two judges are appointed by the Parliament, two by the Government, and two by the Superior Council of Magistracy.
This summer, the term of five constitutional judges expires. So far, only the Superior Council of Magistracy has announced a competition. Only one candidate has submitted his file – Ion Malanciuc, a magistrate at the Criuleni Court, temporarily transferred to the Supreme Court of Justice. If he is appointed to the Constitutional Court, he will replace Serghei Țurcan, whose term expires on July 30th.
The other four mandates, of Domnica Manole and Vladimir Turcan, appointed by the Parliament, and Liuba Sova and Nicolae Rosca, appointed by the Government, expire in August.
In the full court, Constitutional Judge Viorica Puica can be found, appointed by the Superior Council of Magistracy, following the death of Eduard Ababei, in 2023. She is expected to serve her term until November 24, 2029.
