The serious incident in the military unit in Cahul, which resulted in the death of a 16-year-old teenager, occurred in the smoking area designated for visitors. To prevent such tragedies in the future, during the hearings organized by the Parliamentary Committee for National Security, Defense and Public Order, it was proposed to revise the regulations for arranging visitor spaces and to introduce controls.
Requested by IPN, the president of the relevant committee, Lilian Carp, specified that the contracted soldier who accidentally fired the Glock type weapon was not allowed to be armed in that space, nor to be there at that time, as he had been ordered to temporarily replace a colleague.
“The soldier who fired was an experienced one, he also went on peacekeeping missions. He is not a novice soldier, but is presented as a diligent and correct military man,” added Lilian Carp, who mentioned that the tragedy occurred because he did not follow safety regulations.
Initially, the bullet would have penetrated through the sleeve of the teenager’s clothing and stopped in the body. The details will be presented by the General Prosecutor’s Office, after the examination of the evidence collected during the investigation, Lilian Carp further specified.
Following the hearings, the committee members proposed that controls be introduced in the areas designated for visits, for both military personnel and visitors, to detect whether they have weapons or ammunition on them. At the same time, the authorities propose revising the regulations on arranging visitor areas in military units.
On May 10th, on the territory of a military unit in Cahul, a 16-year-old minor died, and an 18-year-old serviceman was injured in a firearm incident. The Glock-type pistol, improperly handled by a contracted soldier, is said to have accidentally discharged.
Initially, it was announced that the minor had died from a cardiac arrest. Later, law enforcement clarified that the boy was hit by the bullet that also wounded the other soldier.
