Giurgiulești Port could play key role in creating emergency fuel stocks

Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu paid a visit to the Oil Terminal of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port, the main point of entry into the country for petroleum products. The visit takes place in the context of the authorities’ plans to secure, starting with 2026, strategic fuel stocks to cover at least 90 days of average net imports or 61 days of domestic consumption, IPN reports.

The terminal, operated by Danube Logistics SRL, has been in operation since 2007 and has storage capacities of over 63 000 cubic meters. Currently, five tanks are used for diesel fuel, and another three for gasoline. The infrastructure allows the simultaneous loading of four trucks and also includes a mixed-gauge railway line, used for loading and unloading.

The minister discussed with the port’s administration the plans to expand the industrial park in the area, where 50 companies are currently active, with total investments of €137 million.

The supply of natural gas was another topic discussed. According to the authorities, the current volume, of 650 cubic meters per hour, does not cover the grain drying needs and other technological processes. For the proper functioning of the port, it is necessary to increase the delivery capacity to 2,500 cubic meters per hour.
