The Metalferos file risks being compromised, and the individuals who allegedly carried out illegal money laundering schemes could definitively escape criminal liability. The statement belongs to civic activist Marcel Darie, who asserts that several people involved in the case have been removed from surveillance, even though the damages would be in the order of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Marcel Darie mentioned during a press conference at IPN that the state-owned company Metalferos had been used for several years as a tool for illegally accumulating money intended for the public budget. According to him, the resources were directed towards financing political parties, personal luxury expenses and other illegal purposes. In this context, the activist questioned whether the criminal case would reach court with a reduced number of defendants and whether the facts would be reclassified, thereby diminishing the seriousness of the charges.

At the same time, the civic activist draws attention to the removal from criminal prosecution of some officials from law enforcement structures, accused of acting in the interest of the network coordinated by the former leader of the Democratic Party, Vlad Plahotniuc.

“According to all probabilities, the file in which Vlad Plahotniuc is targeted seems to be a big farce and I stand by this statement”, said Marcel Darie. He added that it makes no sense to judge the leader of the network exclusively, without holding accountable those who would have implemented the schemes.

Marcel Darie believes that these decisions create the risk that the executors may be completely exonerated, even though there would be evidence and actions documented since 2019. In this regard, he invoked an appeal, filed by the state company’s lawyer, which disputes the orders by which the accusations were annulled.

“The fate of this case, of this ordinance at the Court of Appeal, is being decided now, on January 21. I will be keeping an eye on this case”, emphasized Marcel Darie. The activist concluded that the lack of a clear outcome and the removal of some previously targeted individuals from criminal investigation raise questions about the management of this case and the responsibility of those involved.
