Moldova signs the European Convention on Environmental Protection through Criminal Law

The Republic of Moldova signed on Wednesday in Strasbourg, alongside Portugal and the European Union, the European Convention on the protection of the environment through criminal law. The document provides states with a legal basis for a coherent response to environmental crime, including cross-border ones, reports IPN.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, has strongly urged all other member states to sign and ratify the document. “We must accelerate our collective efforts to protect the environment and combat the ecological crimes that threaten our future,” he emphasized.

The Convention represents a response to the so-called “triple planetary crisis” which involves climate change, pollution, and the loss of biodiversity. It complements the Council of Europe’s Environment Strategy. The document also introduces a monitoring mechanism, designed to ensure the implementation of provisions and hold signatory states accountable.

For the treaty to come into force, ten ratifications are required, of which at least eight must come from member states of the Council of Europe. After coming into force, the convention can be opened to other states outside the organization, in the spirit of international cooperation in the field of environmental protection.

A pavilion with 100 stalls will be built in the “Angro” sector of the Central Market, in the access area from Mitropolit Varlaam street, where the current metal stalls are located. The modernization project was approved by the Chisinau Municipal Council, reports IPN.

The interim director of the municipal enterprise, Vasili Popa, stated that the project is part of the modernization concept of the Central Market, approved by the Chisinau Municipal Council in 2020. The investment is estimated at over 37 million lei and will be covered by the enterprise’s own resources.

According to him, the modernization of the “Angro” sector is necessary because traders are currently operating in metal stalls without a roof, which no longer meet current conditions and do not provide an adequate level of comfort and safety for sellers and buyers.

The works will be carried out in two stages, so that the activity of the economic agents can continue during the interventions. Currently, about half of the places in this sector are occupied. The project completion deadline is at most two years.
