More than 33 kilometres of regional roads in Ungheni and Calarasi districts will be rehabilitated under a World Bank-funded project. According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the work will include asphalt paving, repairs to two bridges, the construction of pavements and improvements to bus stops, IPN reports.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR), contracts for the construction work were signed on Thursday by representatives of the National Road Administration and the companies selected to carry out the project. The total value of the work amounts to €31.4 million.

The institution says that rehabilitation work will be carried out on sections I and II of the G88 Cornești–Boghenii Noi–Napadeni–M5 road and the second section of the G86 G88–Dereneu–G85 road, covering a total of 33.5 kilometres. The routes pass through Cornesti, Poiana, Mircesti, Boghenii Noi, Boghenii Vechi, Drujba, Napadeni, Cornova, Radeni, Dereneu and Duma.

The works will include rebuilding the road foundations, constructing more than 880 metres of culverts and creating over 18 kilometres of drainage ditches. Eight bus stops will also be built, and safety barriers and road signs will be installed. The project also includes upgrading street lighting and reconfiguring telecommunications networks and water pipelines.

The government aims to attract at least two or three private operators to supply jet fuel at Chisinau International Airport, ensuring competition in the market. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said the current arrangement is temporary and that the state should not manage such complex infrastructure in the long term, IPN reports.

Presenting a report on the government’s first 100 days in office, the prime minister said the authorities were considering several options for structuring the market, including shared infrastructure used by multiple operators or the construction of separate facilities. Another option is to upgrade infrastructure formerly owned by Lukoil, which could then be made available to private operators.

Vasile Tofan noted that upgrading it would require tens of millions of lei in investment, and that the government is cautious about spending public funds. Meanwhile, the authorities are in talks with private investors who could build new infrastructure using their own funds.

Regarding the price of jet fuel at Chisinau International Airport, the prime minister noted that it was no higher than at other airports in the region and, according to figures he had personally verified, was actually lower than in Romania.

“The data I’ve received show that the price of kerosene here is actually lower. I think that is a fairly important point,” Vasile Tofan said.

Social welfare workers will undergo professional certification every three years and will be eligible for monthly salary supplements ranging from 750 to 2,000 lei, depending on the qualification level they attain. These provisions are set out in a law passed by Parliament in two readings, which introduces changes to the organization of social services, as well as to staff assessment and professional development in the sector, IPN reports.

The law establishes a system of five professional qualification grades, with Grade I being the highest. According to the explanatory note accompanying the bill, the proposed allowance is 750 lei for Grade V, 1,000 lei for Grade IV, 1,250 lei for Grade III, 1,500 lei for Grade II, and 2,000 lei for Grade I. The law provides for the payment of this monthly allowance under the unified public-sector pay system.

The new system will be introduced gradually. The first round of certification, for obtaining Grade V, is scheduled for 2028. The law also provides for a professional development system that will include onboarding new employees, ongoing training, competency assessments, and supervision. According to the draft legislation, the aim is to give those working in social assistance a clearer professional pathway and opportunities for career advancement.

Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in social work will be eligible for their first professional certification after one year of practice, just like those with a master’s degree.

The new provisions also address how social assistance is granted. The law introduces the concepts of “case management” and “risk of vulnerability” and clarifies who may apply for social assistance on behalf of a family. Applications may now also be submitted by a guardian or another authorised person. In addition, records of social services and their beneficiaries will be maintained through the “eSocial” information system.
