“Antimafie” announces protest

Members of the People’s Movement “Antimafie” intend to stage a protest in front of the Parliament Building in the evening of July 28. These will protest against the current government and against the decision to withdraw the candidacy of Maia Sandu for premiership. They will also demand rejecting candidate Valeriu Strelet, who is nothing but a ‘blackmailable tool’.

In a news conference at IPN, “Antimafie” leader Sergiu Mocanu said the fielding of Maia Sandu for Prime Minister was a kind of blackmail on the part of the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat because the Democrat Vlad Plahotniuc didn’t accept his candidacy. “On Thursday evening, Plahotniuc phoned Vlad Filat and warned him to withdraw Maia Sandu and present a new candidate by Tuesday or Filat would have been questioned at the National Anticorruption Center this morning,” stated Sergiu Mocanu.

According to the leader of “Antimafie”, the nomination of Strelet is the most cynical defiance of Moldovan society since the creation of this ruling alliance. If Valeriu Strelet becomes Premier, this will do nothing but serve the governing mafia. “We will take to the streets and will make effort to gather together more people so that Strelet is rejected under popular pressure. This is our goal,” stated Mocanu, noting that the slogan of this protest is “We can no longer bear you!”.

The Movement’s deputy head Daniela Bodrug said the conditions that Maia Sandu put forward for accepting the post of Premier were similar to those enumerated by the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu, but the difference is that Maia Sandu’s words are accompanied by deeds, while Ghimpu plays the game of Filat and Plahotiuc. “Such a person as Maia Sandu is inconvenient for those who came to power by lie and corruption and pursue one goal – to rob this state,” she stated.

Today’s protest was scheduled to start at 6pm. “Antimafie” aims to also stage protests tomorrow and on the day the Government will be invested.

Local authorities will have another month to finalize voluntary amalgamation procedures and adopt final decisions. The Parliament has approved the extension of the deadline until August 31. Starting from September 1, new voluntary amalgamation processes will no longer be able to be initiated until the first round of the general local elections in 2027, reports IPN.

The amendment was included in the bill on promoting professional ethics and modernizing human resources management in central public administration and amends the Law on the voluntary amalgamation of administrative-territorial units.

The author of the amendment, PAS deputy Ersilia Qatrawi, stated that the extension of the deadline was requested by local public authorities, to allow those who have started the procedures to complete them. “We come, as a request from local public authorities, to extend the date from July 31 to September 1. We give them an additional month for those who have not succeeded,” declared the parliamentarian.

The Vice President of the Parliamentary Commission for Public Administration and Regional Development, Larisa Voloh, clarified that the suspension is temporary and is necessary to avoid the overlap of voluntary amalgamation with the administrative-territorial reform prepared by authorities. Localities that have already begun amalgamation procedures will be able to finalize them by September 1st, but the initiation of new processes will be suspended until the general local elections of 2027.

According to the authors of the amendment, a new administrative-territorial map is set to be approved this fall and implemented alongside the general local elections of 2027. The simultaneous unfolding of these two processes could create uncertainties for local administrations and additional administrative costs.

Media NGOs condemn the harassment and intimidation campaign against the NordNews editorial staff and call on the authorities to intervene to protect press freedom, reports IPN.

In a joint statement, the organizations mention that the attacks and discrediting actions directed against NordNews journalists represent an attempt at intimidation and hindrance of editorial activity. The signatories underline that such practices affect freedom of expression and the public’s right to information.

The organizations call on law enforcement institutions to investigate cases of harassment and intimidation and to ensure a safe environment for the practice of the journalism profession.

At the same time, they express their solidarity with the NordNews team and reaffirm that pressures on independent press are incompatible with the principles of a democratic state.

The statement published by the Center for Independent Journalism does not specify who would intimidate and harass journalists in the north of the country.
