Almost 50 people received consultations and medical advice during an information and prevention campaign dedicated to kidney health, organized on March 13 at the Republican Clinical Hospital "Timofei Moșneaga". The event was held on the occasion of the World Kidney Day, marked annually on the second Thursday of March, IPN reports.
Risk factors for chronic kidney disease were detected in a third of the participants. Doctors also distributed information leaflets about modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors and the optimal time for a nephrological consultation, the Republican Clinical Hospital said.
"We aimed to identify people at risk of developing chronic kidney disease, because this condition is often silent and becomes symptomatic only in advanced stages," said Dr. Tatiana Razlog, acting head of the Nephrology Department.
Tatiana Razlog pointed out that risk factors include obesity, diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure, all of which can be controlled to prevent the progression of the disease.
"Referrals are high and the ward has a surplus of patients. At the same time, the number of cases of kidney disease caused by diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension is increasing, including among young people, who often do not show early symptoms," said the acting head of the ward.
People are advised to consult a nephrologist if they suffer from kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obesity. Also, if symptoms of edema, change in the volume and color of urine, low back pain associated with fever persist.
To keep the kidneys healthy, doctors urge people to drink enough water, reduce salt intake, go for walks, maintain body weight and do not take over-the-counter medicines.
In the Republic of Moldova, 839 patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and 362 patients with chronic renal failure are receiving treatment with hemodialysis and other extracorporeal methods. This year, 233 patients were hospitalized for dialysis treatment.
