Women must be given chance to involve in politics more, NGOs alliance argues
The political parties are also going to be monitored in the electoral campaign by an alliance formed of several NGOs. They will check up if the women are offered equal chances as men in getting involved in politics and in acceding to higher positions within parties, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The members of the ProGen – Alegeri 2009 Alliance told a news conference on Wednesday that, although most of the political parties in Moldova do include women on their electoral lists, they often are given bottom positions, so they are offered minimum chances to get more involved in the country's politics or to get positions in state structures.
“The women are not just good executives, but also decision-makers,” said Daniela Terzi-Barbarosie, a representative of the Partnership for Development Center.
A representative of the Gender Center, Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, says the electoral lists should be compiled by the zipper principle “one man, one woman, one man, one woman.”
According to the chairwoman of the political Club 50/50, Catrina Mardarovici, marginalizing women may be explained by the fact that, in Moldova, there is a dire shortage of specialized services caring for children and elderly, jobs done by women most often.
During the electoral campaign, the alliance will track the correspondence of electoral platforms to the international and national commitments on observing the and promoting gender equality.
