People wishing to run for president of Moldova must be 40 years old or older on election day. Another condition for candidates is to not be sentenced to prison by an irreversible court decision and not have an outstanding criminal record for crimes committed with intent, the Central Electoral Commission recalls.
Eligible candidates must be Moldovan citizens who have lived permanently in the country for no less than 10 years. It is mandatory to speak Romanian and have at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
In addition to the clear criminal record requirement, candidates must also be free of any court-ordered ban from holding public offices.
Candidates may be nominated by political parties that have been properly registered before the election date is officially announced. Blocs of parties may also field candidates, while individuals may run as independents.
Registration of initiative groups supporting presidential candidates will take place between August 21-31.
