The candidate to a seat in the Romanian Parliament, Eugen Tomac, condemns “firmly any kind of abuse on the one involving in this electoral campaign.” “Our candidates tun this campaign in over 100 countries in the whole world and no country has met met them with so many reserves on the part of the authorities as in Moldova,” stated the candidate of the Democrat-Liberal Party (PD-L) from Romania at a news conference in the quarters of Info-Prim Neo News Agency. On Thursday, the Chisinau police held up two members of Eugen Tomac's staff “for identification”, but according to media reports they were released in the evening. “We believe a civilized campaign directly addressed to the Romanian citizens is beneficial, because, in the long run, the representative of the Romanian from Moldova will be a representative in the parliament of a European,” Eugen Tomac said. “We're the only party with a special chapter in our ruling program referring to the Romanians from everywhere separately,” stated the candidate, whose electoral slogan is “Basarabia, citizenship is your right.” The candidate used the occasion to respond to accusations of his opponents who claim he would use Romanian President Traian Basescu's image in electoral interests. “The fact that Elena Basescu (Romanian president's daughter -- e.n.) is getting involved in the electoral campaign, she does it as the general secretary of the the PD-L's youth organization.” “I cannot ignore that, although suspended from by job during this period, I am the advisor of the president,” Tomac retorted to the claims he would not be an advisor to the president. The candidate came accompanied by former political detainees of the Tiraspol regime, Alexandru Lesco, Tudor Popa and by Chisinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, the vice president of the Liberal Party. “It's impossible, from the point of view of the image, not associate, during this period, Mr Tomac and the Romanian President, Mr. Traian Basescu. He has been counseling the Romanian president for years so that the problems of the Romanians from abroad are high on the agenda,” said Chirtoaca, whose party is supporting Tomac. “It's quite another thing if the candidate speculated on this image, but this has not been done,” Chirtoaca insisted. Elena Basescu was to be attending the news conference, but she postponed her arrival at Chisinau for Thursday evening, Eugen Tomac's staff said.
