Moldovan authorities needs to update the human rights legislation and make sure that it works and that it is respected, Prime Minister Dorin Recean declared. Speaking at the National Human Rights Council, the prime minister also stressed the importance of affording equal treatment to children, women and people with disabilities.

The agenda of the Human Rights Council also included discussions on a set of proposed measures to implement the recommendations received during the 40th session of the UN Universal Periodic Review Working Group.

“I am glad that we have aligned ourselves with the 2023 global agenda. We must intensify our efforts and ensure that the degree of respect for human rights on the left side of the Nistru increases. It is our duty to encourage civil society to be more active. It is also necessary to achieve a cultural change among society regarding the equal treatment of all citizens”, Prime Minister Dorin Recean was quoted in a press release.

During the same meeting, the Council heard the Evaluation Report on the implementation of the National Action Plan in the field of human rights for 2018-2022, compiled with the support of the UN Office for Human Rights. The report recommends, among other things, that a new human rights policy document be drafted by the end of this year.

The National Human Rights Council is an advisory body to the Government, established to monitor the implementation of the state policy in the field of human rights, as well as international treaties in the field of human rights to which the Republic of Moldova is a party.
