Warnings applying to motorists

The National Patrolling Inspectorate warns the drivers to equip their vehicles with tires designed for use in winter. According to a note published by the Inspectorate, winter tires are produced specifically for winter driving and are labeled M+S (M.S, M-S, M&S or Mud and Snow), IPN reports.

If the tires are not studded, they must be tied with antiskid chains. If none of these conditions is respected, the use of motor vehicles is banned. Those who will not obey face a fine of up to 200 lei.

The drivers are also asked to permanently adjust the speed to the road conditions and to travel at maximum 30 km/h in settlements and 50 km/h outside them when the roads are covered with glazed frost, ice, snow or wet stones.

The owners of vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes are obliged to use antiskid chains or other homologated equipment. The beginning drivers are warned to avoid travelling on icy roads, at night and on long distances as the poor driving experience can endanger their life and health.
