Voter turnout in Moldova is one of the highest in Europe

The turnout of voters in Moldova is one of the highest in Europe. It can reach even 60% at a time when the average voter turnout in the EU member states is 30%. The information was presented by the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Iurie Ciocan in a press briefing held on February 7 to mark the World Elections Day, Info-Prim Neo reports. Iurie Ciocan said that the CEC members and the electoral officials make effort to improve the legal framework on elections. The electoral authority is ready to implement distance voting if the lawmakers take such a decision. Now the members of the CEC are giving training seminars all over the country and are teaching the electoral officials how to correctly compile the electoral lists. Iurie Ciocan also said that in 2012 the CEC organized six local mayoral elections. They took place correctly and the observers reported no serious violations. The World Elections Day is celebrated all over the world on the first Thursday of February. On this occasion, the members of the CEC are taking part in a number of radio and TV programs and are speaking about this day and the importance of taking part in elections. The World Elections Day was instituted at the Global Conference of Electoral Officials in Hungary in September 2005.
