Voronin says won't talk with Liberals, Socialists

The Communist Party is not willing to participate in government together with the pro-European parties but wants to have checks on the government instead, stated the party's president Vladimir Voronin at a talk-show on the public TV channel Moldova 1.

“The Communist Party cannot govern together with those who have robbed the country four five years. But 300,000 people voted for us, it's a significant number, and we have a duty to fulfill our campaign promises. So we will demand to be given the control of those agencies that will enable us to have checks on the government”, said Vladimir Voronin.

He said that he was ready to talk only with the Liberal-Democrats and the Democrats about a potential cooperation in the Parliament, but “certainly not” with the parties on both “extremes” of the political spectrum, the Liberals and the Socialists.

Voronin said he was still awaiting an invitation from the Lib-Dems and the Democrats to discuss, adding that three negotiators were appointed for this purpose by the party's general assembly last Saturday.

When asked whether the Communists would endorse a pro-European President, Vladimir Voronin said: “We shall wait and see. First they have to elect the leadership of the Parliament and then form the Government. We shall see how they manage, and then we shall talk”.

At the same time, he said the Communists would not endorse a constitutional amendment to make it possible to elect the President with a simple majority and would not support the idea of the President being elected by popular vote.
