Voronin congratulates Musuc on becoming Chisinau Council chair
President Vladimir Voronin has met today with the Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, Eduard Musuc, elected on June 6 as chairman of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) with the vote of 27 councilors.
According to a release from the presidential press service, the meeting centered on the recent developments in the CMC and possibilities of improving its activity. The interlocutors are said to have discussed key issues of the city which require joint efforts on the part of local and central authorities and outlined plans for the next period.
Eduard Musuc has told Info-Prim Neo that he was invited by President Vladimir Voronin to talk out the situation in the Council and, in particular, to search for ways out of the impasse lived by the Council. “This meeting will contribute to reviving the relationship between the city's administration and the central authorities and to forging constructive cooperation with the government, the Cabinet and its agencies”, declared Musuc, adding that the meeting covered a variety of topics, “with no emphasis on a particular subject”.
“Vladimir Voronin congratulated me on my election and said the government was ready to support all the initiatives from the CMC that would serve the citizens' interests”, Musuc said.
The new chairman announced he would convene a Council meeting on June 26. The business order includes 15 items.
Eduard Musuc was elected to the post of CMC chairman on June 6 with the vote of the Communists, Christian-Democrats, Social-Democrats, Christian-Humanists, and the Ravnopravie faction. The same councilors discharged Mihai Ghimpu from office. For more than two weeks, the two camps have fought for the post, sending the Council into a deadlock. While Mihai Ghimpu's supporters and Ghimpu himself claim his dismissal was unlawful because of procedural breaches – the dismissal act allegedly wasn't countersigned by the CMC secretary, the Communists and their new allies argue everything was right.
CMC Secretary Valeriu Didencu told Info-Prim Neo he signed both acts on June 20. “I intended to do so from the very beginning. 27 votes were indeed enough to dismiss Mihai Ghimpu”, he added.
