The Alliance for European Integration is concerning itself with folly as the country is stricken by disaster, declared Communist leader Vladimir Voronin at the plenary meeting of the party’s Central Committee on Saturday, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vladimir Voronin told the press afterwards that the main topics discussed were the “disastrous situation” in the country, the farmers’ problems and the latest actions of the authorities. “An emergency situation should be announced. The drought took away the harvest, the people won’t have their mamaliga (traditional cornmeal - IPN) on their tables, the prices will rise, and amid all this they are busy forbidding the symbols of Communists”, fumed Voronin. “The budget deficit is 1.3 billion lei, and they’re busy sacking district heads representing the Communist Party. They tell our men bluntly that they’ll be sacked. We complained to all the presidents and parliaments of CIS countries, and the OSCE, informing them about the banditry that rules the country and the violations of human rights”, said the Communist leader. According to Vladimir Voronin, AIE wants to outlaw the Communist Party and hold early elections. “We won’t give up anything”, the PCRM head stated categorically. “Our symbol, beside the hammer and the sickle, has a book. What will they do with it? Burn it, like did Hitler? Perhaps, this way, they want to forbid the very statehood of the Republic of Moldova?”, declared the Communist leader. As regards the Liberal-Democrats’ proposal that symbols of totalitarian regimes should be forbidden in public, not only in political use, Voronin labeled it as folly because nobody had the right to forbid the people to dress as they like. The political use of Communist symbols was forbidden by Parliament, at the PL initiative. In order to be able to participate in the next elections, the Communist Party would have to give up the hammer and the sickle.
