Vladimir Voronin: We cannot say electoral system change was made honestly and democratically

The leader of the Party of Communists Vladimir Voronin said the change in the electoral system wasn’t made honestly and democratically. He made the statement in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“We can comply with the new electoral system so as not to miss a four-year term in power. The parties that do not take part in elections and do not hold seats in Parliament have another fate, but we cannot say that this was introduced honestly and democratically,” stated Vladimir Voronin. According to him, the mixed-member electoral system advantages the Party of Socialists.

The Communist leader said his party remained with only seven seats in Parliament and could not oppose the change. They will support civil society in its intention to initiate a referendum on the abrogation of the mixed system. “We subscribed to these organizations’ initiative and will start to collect signatures in favor of the legislative referendum aimed at changing this law,” noted Vladimir Voronin.

Referring to the current proportional representation system, analyst Anatol Taranu said this started to be used in Moldova not in 2009, when the pro-European parties came to power, but much earlier, when the Communists were in power.
