Vladimir Voronin urges Gagauzians not to vote a candidate of other confession

President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin urged the population of ATU Gagauz-Yeri not to vote Mihail Formuzal, who is a candidate for the position of basckan, because he “is a Baptist”, shows a statement of Formuzal. According to a cited source, during a visit in the region, on 21 October currently, head of state would have asserted that the appointment of Formuzal must not be allowed because he is a Baptist, and in Moldova 90% of the population are orthodox. Formuzal thinks that this statement is aimed at inciting the inter-religious conflicts in the region and contravenes the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova that proclaims the freedom of confession. The head of state’s statement contravenes both the European values and the orthodox ones, shows the cited document. The elections of bashkan in Gagauzia will take place on December 3 currently. The government party announced it will support the present bashkan Gheorghe Tabunscic. Mihail Formuzal is one of the leaders of the opposition in the region.
