Visa-free regime with EU may attract skilled labor force to Moldova, opinion

Moldova should consider attracting experienced labor force by granting Moldovan nationality when the visa regime with the EU is abolished, the chairman of the National Participation Council (CNP) Sergiu Ostaf said in the debate “Moldovan society and the political class after Vilnius: between cooperation and confrontation”, staged by IPN News Agency.

According to Sergiu Ostaf, it’s time to modernize Moldova, while the Association Agreement initialed at the Vilnius Summit is an instrument for civil society to make the government responsible. “The whole society will have more instruments of influence on the government. We will be firm when deviations from the European values take place. This government preferred the European values to pragmatic interests, which didn’t happen in the case of other governments,” said the chairman of the CNP.

The expert is sure that there will be political stability in Moldova the next year. “Survival is possible only where there is political stability. I think there is powerful association with the European values of the current government and the political benefits that the agreement will provide offer the chance of winning the next elections,” stated Sergiu Ostaf.

Referring to the reforms aimed at combating corruption and at optimizing justice, he said that one year and a half is an insufficient period for speaking about major changes. “In order to achieve tangible results, such a period is too short. Miracles would be needed. But we must take this opportunity. I consider that many people do not yet subscribe to the European values. There are serious obstacles. I would like to hear constant, weekly messages about the importance of discouraging corruption and combating this phenomenon from the politicians,” said the expert.

Sergiu Ostaf also said that in the context of the actions of the regional players, only the current political configuration in Moldova made the initialing of the Association Agreement possible. “It is a result with benefits that should not be wasted by making mistakes. I think that one or two mistakes may prevent the current coalition from governing further,” he stated.

The public debate “Moldovan society and the political class after Vilnius: between cooperation and confrontation” is the 24th of the series “Development of political culture by public debates”. The IPN project is supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
