“In the name of the national interests and of the prosperity of the Moldovan nation, the MPs should leave the accusations typical of prosecutors aside as everyone turned into prosecutor and is ready to blame the colleagues from the other camps for all evils,” said expert in political sciences Victor Stepaniuc, ex-Deputy Prime Minister. As a historian, he reminds that the given tactic was used only during the French and Bolshevik revolutions and during the Nazi Germany. “The tactic according to which the politicians, in a democratic regime, accuse the others of all evils should be left in the past. We should learn to speak a civilized language if we want to have a political class and a future. We are very split at civilization, culture levels, at the level of interpretation of priorities and at geopolitical level. The confrontation between the central, regional and other elites will not produce something good. We must look for those formulas that would unite society and the political class so that they work in one direction,” Victor Stepaniuc stated in IPN’s public debate “Components of political confrontation and impact of this on society”.
The expert said that at a particular stage, when a problem should be solved cardinally, such as the fight against corruption or the pandemic, if a politician plays a destructive role, prompt action is surely needed, but in cooperation with the people and the existing political elites. “Parliament is the representative of society elected as a result of recognized democratic and fair elections, even if there are particular violations. We have a legal Parliament, with all the faults and problems of some of the MPs. For example the Shor Party shouldn’t have had access to elections, but political parties and civil society hadn’t insisted since 2017 on the removal of this this from the electoral race. The oligarchic regime is not a product of Plahotniuc. It was established step by step during a long period of time, as a result of the illegalities that brought several oligarchic groups to power,” stated Victor Stepaniuc.
According to him, society can contribute to the escalation of the confrontation between the political elites up to a political crisis. But society can exert influence for the impact of this confrontation to be reduced and things to return to normality. “It is now unclear how the political forces, civil society, the organized groups at regional and local levels will act in this confrontation between a pro-European President and the parliamentary majority,” said the expert, noting that if the Government is voted in, this will bring an element of stability, but should be competent, professional and ready to work for several months and to correct a number of things.
“I think the ideal variant is for the political class in the Republic of Moldova to be ready for a national pact for developing the country. If they are not ready, the national interests are only declared by all the components of the political class.”
