The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Veronica Dragalin said that mobilizing all the available resources for eliminating the corrupt people from the justice system – arrest them, collect evidence and bring them to justice - is the institution’s responsibility. “This is our priority for 2023 as it is a matter of urgency. We will not make any headway if there are corrupt persons in the justice system,” the chief anticorruption prosecutor told a news conference.
According to her, there are multiple cases when different persons, including lawyers, say they have influence over a prosecutor or judge and ask and take sums that can amount to thousands of euros for exerting this influence. This is a vicious circle that should be broken and such cases should be therefore denounced.
“The persons who give bribe, but report this fact to the investigation body are freed from liability. So, we do not negotiate something with these persons, but the law says the person who reports this fact is freed from legal responsibility. Why? Because our lawmakers considered that it is more important to be able to catch persons with posts, with power and authority, such as prosecutors and judges,” stated Veronica Dragalin.
The chief anticorruption prosecutor called on the people to denounce those who ask for a bribe. She also called upon the justice system employees to report acts of corruption, including among mates, and not to become co-participants in illegalities. She noted that progress can be made only this way.
