Veaceslav Ionita: Rise in tariffs is illegal

The Prosecutor General’s Office is obliged to  determine the legality of the National Agency for Energy Regulation’s decision to increase the electricity and natural gas tariffs, former MP Veaceslav Ionita said in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.

“The rise in the prices of energy resources is a subject not for the press, but rather for the Prosecutor General’s Office. The experts must be summoned and questioned by prosecutors so that the latter collect the evidence needed for starting a criminal case,” stated Ionita.

He considers that the Agency violated a number of norms when it allowed increasing the tariffs. “The efforts made to ensure proper regulation in the energy sector during many years were annihilated during one night. The fact that other suppliers decided to enter the same game is even more serious. Their logics is - if their requests to raise tariffs were accepted, why shouldn’t we try too? But these rises are not justified economically,” said the former lawmaker.

Ionita considers the lack of reaction on the part of the party leaders that formed the ruling alliance is due to the fact that they feel culpable. “They do not have what to say. By silence they show that they feel guilty. Any of their statements about the rise in tariffs will lead to negative reactions in society,” he stated.

Last week, the National Agency for Energy Regulation accepted a 37% rise in the electric power tariffs and a 15% rise in the natural gas tariffs.
