Vasile Tarlev: The Transnistrian conflict is an open wound to every Moldovan patriot
The Transnistrian conflict is a major problem for Moldova and an open wound to every true patriot of this country, stated Premier Vasile Tarlev at the most recent meeting of the National Commission for European Integration, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Moldova’s territorial integrity is a top priority for the government; although there is a strong desire to make Moldova a modern, prosperous and credible state, and despite significant efforts made to see that happen, our country is very much affected by the lack of a single economic, customs, financial and banking space, said Tarlev.
At the same time, the Premier saluted Brussels’ position on the Transnistria settlement.
President Vladimir Voronin has stated recently that the most important objective for this year is the unification of the country. He expressed hope that all of us will make their best to see our compatriots from Transnistria join the next Parliament of Moldova after the 2009 elections.
At the same time, Moldovan political analysts believe that the future of the Transnistria settlement depends mostly on Russia, which is not currently inclined to make any concession until the next year’s parliamentary elections.
