Underground platforms for waste collection are to be installed in Chișinău municipality, making it possible to avoid the unpleasant odor and the spread of filth. After the installation of the platforms, the separate collection of glass, paper, plastic and household waste will be promoted. The idea was put forward by Union Save Basarabia candidate for the position of mayor of the capital, Valeriu Munteanu.

In an IPN press conference, the mayoral hopeful said that he observed the implementation of similar projects in Romanian cities. Inspired by these examples, he promoted such a project when he held the position of minister of the Environment, between 2015 and 2017. Subsequently, it was proposed for Ecological Fund money to be allocated for the construction of ten underground platforms, two in each sector. The money was allocated and by the end of 2017 the platforms should have been put into operation. However, the process has stalled and the platforms are currently being stored in the warehouse of the contractor selected by the municipality.

"Due to the inactivity of the Ministry of Environment and Chișinău City Hall, the project stalled. According to the project that we conceived and forwarded to the municipality, by the end of 2017, we should have had ten platforms. This project would have allowed us to popularize this practice and to educate the citizens based on this positive example. At the same time, according to the project, it was expected that at least 25 such platforms would be installed each year", the candidate said.

Valeriu Munteanu said that this is not the only project initiated when he was minister. According to him, upon leaving office, a project of ten million euros for the cleaning of the Bâc river was carried out, however, the project was also put on hold. Additionally, as a minister, he promoted the allocation of financial resources for the installation of waste bins in the capital, as well as for the installation of waste platforms with separate containers for paper, glass and household garbage. However, this objective was not achieved.

"I commit myself, as mayor of Chișinău, by the end of the year, regardless of whether I will have to work day and night, to install the ten underground platforms. Each year we will install at least 25 such underground platforms using municipal funds. Obviously, we will do our best to identify exterior sources of funds in order to replace the platforms that we already have, especially those in courtyards", said Valeriu Munteanu.
