2024 will be a year of resistance for Ukraine and the U.S. military and financial aid will strengthen neighboring Ukraine’s defense capability, said IPRE deputy director Mihai Mogîldea. According to him, the delay in the U.S. military aid placed Ukraine’s ambition to launch a counteroffensive this year on pause. For his part, Victor Juc, director of the Institute of Legal, Political and Sociological Research of the Moldova State University, noted that the military aid provided to Ukraine by the U.S. is crucial for supporting the Ukrainian people and thanks to this support the Ukrainian army will be able to ensure stability on the front line, IPN reports.
On April 21, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a $61 billion financial and military aid package for Ukraine. Following this vote, the Ukrainian army is to receive equipment and ammunition to cope with the Russian attacks. Expert Mihai Mogîldea said that the U.S. aid will strengthen Ukraine’s resistance capacities, but the evolution of this war will be clear after the U.S. presidential election and the European Parliament elections.
“This military and financial aid will strengthen Ukraine’s defense capability. It will help Ukraine have the resources it needs to withstand Russia’s onslaught. For this year, the forecasts of all experts were not exactly positive because the longer than six-month delay in providing this military aid stopped Ukraine’s ambition to launch a counteroffensive this year. As early as last autumn, it was clear that 2024 would be a year of Ukrainian resistance, a year in which Ukraine would not be able to launch a counteroffensive and push the Russian troops beyond the current front line. The good news coming from the U.S. makes us more confident that Ukraine can hold on and strengthen its positions, and for next year it can set more ambitious plans. There is an election in the U.S. in November and there are also the elections for the European Parliament and a new leadership of the European Union will be chosen. This process will end by September and in November-December it will be clear to everyone what potential resources both the Europeans and the Americans can allocate for Ukraine,” Mihai Mogîldea stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
Victor Juc said the $61 billion in U.S. aid is extremely important for the Ukrainian military and will help stabilize the front line.
“The U.S. assistance to Ukraine was absolutely necessary because Ukraine has been facing a total shortage of ammunition, weapons. I wouldn’t say that the Republican Party deliberately delayed the adoption of this aid. Simply, there are other interests in the U.S. Especially since Donald Trump said that after his presumed victory, he would focus on Central and South America, meaning Europe would remain in the background. Russia has massively used the resources at its disposal and now, because this help from the U.S. will come, the situation could change, but not much. This aid will rather stabilize the front. The army, the political class and the population of Ukraine are very tired,” stated Victor Juc.
After being approved by the U.S. House of Representatives, the aid intended for Ukraine is yet to be approved by the Senate and to be sent to the U.S. President for promulgation. In reaction to the U.S. initiative, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the House’s decision “will kill even more Ukrainians because of the Kiev regime.”
