The US condemns the action by Transnistrian forces at Varnita on April 21. In a declaration remitted for spreading to Info-Prim Neo, The US ambassador in Chisinau states that the seizure of the harbor facility was an unjustified and aggressive act that could have had extremely dangerous consequences. The Embassy appreciates the calm and the responsibility of the Moldavian authorities regarding this provocation and makes an appeal to the Joint Control Commission and to the participants at the negotiation process to take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Also, the US Embassy made an appeal to the Transnistrian authorities to give back any property taken and release any detained persons, and to refrain from further unilateral actions. The Transnistrian authorities motivate the seizure of the port by the necessity to halt the thefts of its goods. They consider the port is a subdivision of the port from Bender subordinated to the secessionist regime. The authorities from Chisinau state the port is rented by a Moldavian commercial firm and does not submit to the port from Bender but is under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Moldova as the entire Varnita village.
