The United Nations will provide US$70,000 for giving first aid to the persons affected by the low temperatures in Moldova in response to the Government’s request for help, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the UNDP. Moldova, as other countries of the region, has experienced low temperatures during several weeks. The cold makes victims and causes interruptions in the public services. According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, at least 20 cases of hypothermia are recorded daily. The number of house fires is on the rise and many settlements, especially those in southern Moldova remained without electricity following the damaging of the power lines. In cooperation with the local authorities and the NGOs Caritas and the Red Cross, the UN offered fuel and equipment for heating the rehabilitation points set up by the Government in a number of settlements, so that they provide temporary shelter to the people who need to warm themselves up. The socially deprived persons and families were supplied with clothes, blankets and food products. ”Over the last few years, the UN helped Moldova to overcome the consequences of the natural disasters and the climate change effects,” said Kaarina Immonen, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova. “Currently, our efforts are aimed at helping those who need heat and access to the main services.” The temperatures in northern Moldova during the last few days dropped to minus 31 degrees Celsius at night.
