The Federation of Education and Science Unions said that education system employees are voicing their concerns and indignation over compulsory vaccination and regarding the recommendation to pay out of pocket for COVID-19 tests. The education unions are calling on government decision-makers, including Health Minister Ala Nemerenco, to elaborate on the recommendations issued on August 23 and to avoid making them mandatory.

Referring to the Minister's announcement that unvaccinated educational staff are to undergo a COVID-19 test every 14 days at their own expense, the Federation pointed out that all teachers pay 9% of their salaries every month for medical insurance. This should cover expenses for both rapid antigen and PCR tests.

"Population immunization is necessary in order to overcome the pandemic crisis, but it is important to respect the voluntary principle of vaccination and to avoid any kind of abuse or intimidation. Attempting to bind the vaccination process with the curtailment of constitutional rights to work, health and life is an abuse and a blatant violation of citizens' rights and freedoms", said the Union Federation in a press release.

The Federation of Education and Science Unions said that it will consult with the teaching collectives and then, if necessary, will issue an official reaction.

The National Extraordinary Public Health Commission ruled that the school year is to begin on September 1 with a physical presence for all pupils and teachers. The authorities have recommended achieving immunization among teachers and non-teaching staff of at least 95% by 1 October. Health Minister Ala Nemerenco said that until then, unvaccinated teaching and non-teaching staff will perform and submit, out of pocket, the result of a COVID-19 diagnostic test (PCR or rapid antigen test) every 14 days.
