Unionist parties have different visions regarding local elections

All unionist parties must work together for the local elections, set for October 20. The dispersal of unionist forces is very harmful. The statement was made by Daniela Bodrug, vice president of the People's Antimafia Movement, in the TVR Moldova program "Punctul pe azi". First Party of National Unity vice-president, Ana Guțu, said that unity is impossible in the current political situation. Ion Cebanu, Liberal Party vice president, considers that a potential candidate for mayor would not achieve unification, but should rather take care of Chișinău's problems.

“If each unionist party submits its own candidate for the municipality of Chișinău, then the binomial PSRM-ACUM will gain from this division and each unionist party will contribute to their gain. That is why we have proposed to engage in talks, which should take place on a public platform and which would allow each party to present its position”, said Daniela Bodrug.

Ana Guțu, first vice president of the Party of National Unity, argues that the political situation has been shaped in such a way that it is no longer possible to coagulate all the unionist parties and NGOs in a single force. “Rather, we could convince the unionist electorate to support a single unionist candidate for the Chișinău City Hall. We need a Romanian candidate and when I say Romanian I mean that he or she has to identify as Romanian, must know his or her roots and will lead under the banner launched by Mayor Nicolae Costin”, said the politician. Ana Guțu claimed that she talked with the Liberal Democratic Party and with the Liberal Reformist Party regarding the creation of a unionist bloc for local elections, yet the discussion process came to a halt when the PLDM withdrew and the PLR restructured itself. First PUN vice president says that an alternative would be for unionist candidates for mayor to withdraw from the race in favor of a common unionist candidate.

Ion Cebanu, vice president of the Liberal Party, said that the party does not yet have a registered candidate for Chișinău City Hall. The politician added that in order to build a true unionist force, it is necessary to unify all forces. In his opinion, a possible candidate for the mayor of Chișinău City Hall, besides the fact that he or she must be a good Romanian, the candidate must also be a good professional. "We cannot put forward candidates for Chișinău City Hall who claim, as mayor, to unite Moldova and Romania. That's ridiculous. This would hinder the idea of unionism as a national ideal. The mayor of Chișinău has certain tasks and administrative purposes, which the mayor has to fulfil, regardless of whether he or she likes it or not”, said Ion Cebanu.
