Unification March goes without incidents, despite attempts

The Unification March organized on Sunday in Chisinau by the Civic Platform “Action 2012”, took place without major incidents. The police announced in a press release that it prevented two attempts by youths that declared themselves supporters of the Moldova’s Patriots Party to block the path of the demonstrators, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to police estimations, about 1,200 people attended the rally outside the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, which was the starting point of the march, and 100 others joined the procession near the Arch of Triumph. Elena Podoleanu, representative of the Civic Platform “Action 2012”, told Info-Prim Neo that about 8,000 people participated in the event. The participants signed a memorandum calling for the introduction in the Constitution of Romanian as the official language. The demonstrators also demanded the outlawing of the Communist Party and the urgent settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. The Unification March started at the Moldovan Academy of Sciences and moved along the streets Ismail and Mateevici towards the Summer Theater in the “Valea Morilor” Park. According the Platform's representative, the next march will take place on October 21 in Bucharest.
